It is such a cliche any more. The scams people pull to sell their "miracle elixirs". You see them all the time, but do you ever take a closer look? Notice the "hair triangle" in the woman's hair on her left side about an inch above her ear. There is no way that hair formation could happen twice! The photo is obviously completely Photoshopped! There are many other signs of this. Maybe the next time you are thinking of buying a "Miracle Elixir" you'll take a closer look!

Suzie Tremmel said she would like my advice on her recent picture she posted on my Facebook Student Page. Below is her original image and then my suggested image. A couple things about my suggestions first. I was working from a very small JPEG so quality is lost especially in the sky. I also left the spot in the sky area of the water to show what dust on the sensor can do in an image. I teach how to see dust on the sensor and cleaning in my Intermediate class.

First, I cropped off some of the rocks/gravel on the right. There's just to much of it in the image. It makes it look like an unnatural road. It also keeps my eye from appreciating the leading lines and details of the mountains. My eye hangs on the rock area which isn't the most interesting part. I enhanced the lines and color a bit to make the picture pop a bit more. I increased the blue reflection a bit to reflect the blue sky more and balance out the sky color. I worked to also bring out the various different shades of green in the trees and land. I brightened the mountain rock to make it feel more like the morning/evening sun caressing the earth. I also dropped the horizon line a little bit out of the center. This was a quick edit. Could have done a little more with a full res. image.

These are some of the things I teach in my Lightroom, Fine Art and Photoshop classes. I hope this helps!

Pretty little beach side bird. Little thing was just hanging out. I moved to the angle I wanted because it didn't seem to bother the bird that I was there. I wanted the leaves to kind of frame the bird and for the background, it kind of gave a Yin/Yang feel.

Global Shutter is not new, but new to mirrorless. It is great for any photography dealing with motion. It freezes the image rather than showing motion. It can also capture images much faster for a higher Frames/sec. It's biggest advantage to me is that it can sync a flash at shutter speeds up to 1/80,000 of a second! Some disadvantages are that it can increase read noise, somewhat eliminate motion blur when you want it and often needs a reduces pixel count.

Depth of Field has always had it's limitations whether you want to go Shallow or Deep, something else is usually lost. Maybe you wanted to get more depth of field but had to sacrifice shutter, aperture or ISO. The article below is about a newly developed technology (there are others, but...) that may end up in your cameras or at least your Smart Phone that lets you choose your Depth of Field... AFTER you take the picture.

20 Years of Durham Tech. Photography Students

This year I am celebrating my 20th year anniversary of teaching students photography at Durham Tech. College! The photo below represents the over 2000 students I have taught at Durham Tech. and a project I have been working on for all those years. Yeah...that was one long photo project! LOL. Took a very very long time just to put all the photos together for this one picture alone. In my first course, Photography: The Basics, I had the students do a self-portrait as their first assignment in order to start educating the students on camera controls and composition. I have collected these portraits for the past 20 years to ultimately make this one image. I am very proud of my students and how well they have done. I have taught photography since the fifth grade to my peers in school and have taught at many colleges, schools, organizations, and businesses. Durham Tech. College has been the longest. When I first started teaching at Durham Tech. most students had a film camera. Now most students use digital cameras. The students and myself have volunteered to help many local community projects in the past relative to photography. My students have always rated my classes as the best around. The students have been from ages 16 to 83 years of age, from all walks of life, and from many counties and countries. I not only teach photography, I am very good at photography and have won many International, national and local awards as well.

These days everything is turning to video. We watch TV and movies, people are always posting video they took on YouTube and the like from their phones. TikTok even has promoted short video's. However, sadly, this leaves out very important qualities that come from reading and still photography. With reading a story we have to use our imagination. An imagination that builds upon itself as we read. Still photography, does the opposite and the same. With a photograph, we have time to inspect all the elements included in the photo. We get time to learn more about the surroundings or elements included within the frame. We can gain more insight to a specific area or location, for example. Within one frame a whole story can be told. A photograph can also accompany writing which can help us to more understand the story with specifics and still allow us to use our imagination. Photo's have a certain "je ne sais quoi" that video doesn't have. Below is a slide show that I hope you will enjoy. This eel was not happy I was there. This isn't a great shot, but considering I got one was a plus. As I tried to get closer for the shot, so did he, but not in a good way. He would like jut out of his hidey hole. I figured I had better quickly move on.

Lots of interesting thing on Panyee Island. It is a very small "floating" island. Originally a fishing village, but now I think more dedicated to being a place where all the many tours can take the customers for lunch by boat. Most of the island is dilapidated. However two things stand out, one is the temple in very good condition and two is this restaurant in excellent condition. Accept for the hand rail, LOL. I think that mainly right handed people go to this restaurant.

All I used was Color Balance and saw the image this way best. It adds a surreal look to a unique angle with fish heading towards the camera. The beach, girl, chairs and umbrellas help to keep the picture tropical. I just couldn't wait to post this picture even though I have a months worth of pictures from Thailand that I am currently working on in series form.

This Pelican was just gliding along the tip of the wave with such grace and ease. You can even see his shadow across the raise of the wave. There even seems to be a tiny school of fish in the middle of the wave.

I love this photo. It's so much fun. If you've ever stared at the clouds to try and see things in the cloud's shapes, this is a ton better. If the picture could be presented larger, you would see more shapes that take your imagination in every part you look. The textures, colors and shapes alone are really interesting. How did nature create so many different shaped and colored strands all in the same place. Warning: If you stare at one spot in the picture to long you will go blind! Ok, well, it all depends on your definition of to long and imagination.

The longer I stare at this the more I see. I like the flow of the flower's lines. The blurry leaves on the left side keep changing images that I see. I see an Asian Panda sitting with a skinny head and right arm pointing away. I see a man or monkey with a big mouth and his nose is almost touching the left edge of the photo. I could go on. It's fun when images do that. Kinda like looking up at puffy clouds. I could easily turn this picture into a border runner along the wall. I applied artistic brushes to the image which can be seen more the larger the image.

Coolest jet I've ever seen. A Fighter would be cooler, but for a jet I like the clean lines and the placement of the engines. There looks like a round dish on top. If that's the case then it maybe a reconnaissance jet. It could just be a part connecting the engines to the plane.

I believe these "flowers" grow more in the shade. I think they are really interesting because of their wood like texture. This is the closest I have gotten to a good shot of them. Partially I think because of their flat texture.

Really liked this portion of the waterfall, how the light was coming into it, but filtered, the water making white sprays of light and so much more. I had to hang from a tree over a Ravine to get this shot that was about 60 yards away. Definitely best seen on a large screen.

The Heron is basically silhouetted against the sky. There is a little detail left in the Heron to give it some shape. I waited for him to fly up between the blue and orange as the sun was rising. I've always liked silhouettes were you can tell what it is just by the shape.

The water was pretty still. So, when the boat made these waves, it made a beautiful pattern in a crystal blue Lake Mead. The picture shows a starting point and the lines lead you to the boat.

What can I say about this one. I like it for so many reasons. How often do you get to see pointed peaks on mountains. I like the water reflections before the island and how it contrasts with the obscurity of the water in back of the island. The mountains themselves have so many different colors and textures that I believe is rare to find.

Through the years there have been many pictures taken of the Hoover Dam. I wanted to try getting a different angle than had been done before. As far as I can initially tell, this was a unique angle. I just can't decide which one I like better. One has the road as the dominant feature in the picture. The other splits the dominance with the river and bottom of the dam. Visually I like the vertical one better, but as documentary, the horizontal Illustrates the dam better. Sooo...please tell me which one you think is better? Thanks!

I'm posting this pic to demonstrate my previous comments and help give a perspective on the photos posted from Upper Antelope Canyon. You have groups coming in and then turning around to go back out. The shots I got, I consider lucky. Tight spaces, no tripod, sloooow shutter speeds, high ISO and people bumping into you all the way.

Very cool place to see, but seriously not at all photographer friendly. Was actually very disappointed. The Indian Reservation is only concerned about cash. There are apparently at least 5 tour companies running people through this small channel. There are so many groups being pushed through there that it is hard to even stop much less take pictures. Add this with the low light changing constantly, and your lucky to get any shots at all. I was not able to take the "photographers tour", which costs extra, due to time and tour transportation, but apparently that tour is also slaved to the masses going through the Canyon. By the way, I was told they are dropping the photographers tour in about a month....it's hindering them from pushing more people through the Canyon. Beautiful light comes through the Canyon, even though I was not there at the right time of year.

I was pretty happy with this shot. Considering it's at ISO 6400, while moving....did I mention how many drinks I had in a half hour? This shot basically has most of the primary hotels on the strip, The Flamingo, Bellagio, The Mirage, Harrah's, Bally's, Caesar's Palace, Paris, The Cosmopolitan, The Linq, Linq Promenade, High Roller, etc. I stayed at the Linq's. Wasn't bad, but watch out for the bate and switch! What ever you are getting, make sure they give you the price in writing. I was told $30 for an upgrade and they ended up charging $49/night. Not to mention the daily $40 "Resort Fee" for nothing at all. Did enjoy the business trip. I did gamble way to much. I placed my whole two dollars in the slot machine and lost it in 20 seconds or less. Did have some interesting experiences.
